Brief entries chiefly record the weather and daily farm activities. There are frequent mentions of African American farm hands, cooks and wash women. The journal also notes recreation including baseball games, hunting, Sons of Confederate Veterans meetings, trips to the Virginia State Fair and the Jamestown Exposition, 1907; attendance at Liberty Baptist Church; hearing William Jennings Bryan deliver his "Prince of Peace" lecture; attending Taft's inauguration; visits from friends and family; and the downtown Charlottesville fire of February 1909.
